At Edzell, now a fully Montessori nursery, every day is filled with opportunities for your child to explore, learn, and grow in a fun and engaging environment. Our daily rhythm is thoughtfully designed to balance structure with creativity, giving children the freedom to pursue their interests while also guiding them through enriching experiences.

Mornings at Edzell follow the Montessori work cycle, where children immerse themselves in hands-on, self-directed learning. This approach encourages independence, problem-solving, and a deep sense of curiosity.

In the afternoons, we shift to a focus on outdoor adventures and exciting activities such as cooking, Spanish lessons, and nature exploration. Whether it’s music, art, storytelling, or gardening, our staff are actively involved, gently guiding the children while allowing plenty of room for them to take the lead.

We believe in the importance of balancing structured and unstructured play, indoors and outdoors, to help children develop confidence, independence, and essential social and academic skills.

Join us at Edzell, where Montessori principles shape a joyful and fulfilling learning experience for your child, both in the classroom and beyond!

A typical day

A typical day at Edzell Nursery begins at 8:30 am when we warmly welcome children at the entrance. We understand that some children may need extra time to settle in, so parents are always welcome to accompany their little ones inside until they feel comfortable.

If you arrive after 8:45 am, simply ring the doorbell, and one of our friendly staff members will be there to greet you.

Mornings at Edzell follow the Montessori work cycle, where children are free to explore and engage in activities that spark their curiosity and creativity. Our single, open-plan room is designed for children to move freely between different Montessori learning materials and stations. They also have the freedom to flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, including our large garden area equipped for active play.

We offer a flexible snack time, allowing children to enjoy a healthy snack whenever they feel ready.

At Edzell, we encourage children to respect their environment by tidying up after each activity, fostering responsibility and care for their surroundings.

After enjoying their packed lunch, the afternoon is filled with exciting outdoor adventures and indoor group activities. Weather permitting, we venture out to explore local parks and natural spaces. If the weather is not ideal, we discuss it with the children and may continue indoor activities, but we love to get outside whenever possible.

As we near the end of the day, we gather for a special circle time where the children share their adventures, celebrate birthdays the Montessori way, or even have a show-and-tell moment to showcase their favourite items.

By 3:00 pm, it Is time to collect your little human after a day full of learning, exploration, and fun at Edzell Nursery.

We encourage children to learn about making positive food choices and even get involved in preparing our delicious and healthy daily snacks. Fridays are especially exciting because we have a dedicated kitchen where we prepare our famous porridge and other treats.

Every Tuesday, we have a music specialist who visits the nursery to play the piano and lead the kids in singing songs. This includes getting ready for our annual Christmas Nativity Play and other concerts throughout the year.

We also have weekly activities focused on gardening and exploring nature, where the children get to learn all about the outdoors. They also love going on regular outings to cool places around Edinburgh like Starbank Park, the Botanics, Inverleith Park and Wardie Bay amongst others.

In addition, we offer our "Edzell Explorers" programme, where we head over to our special spot at Eagle Lodge It is an adventure-filled experience where we build awesome dens, learn how to make fires safely, climb trees like little monkeys, and even create art in the midst of nature's beauty. The goal is to unleash our inner explorers and learn about the importance of conservation and environmental protection while developing a lifelong love of nature and a commitment to environmental stewardship.

And let's not forget about our fantastic annual Sports Day, which wraps up our Summer Term with a bang! It is a wonderfully fun event where the children, their families, and our staff all participate and have a blast.

The Nursery Facilities

Edzell Nursery is nestled in a spacious, open-plan church hall with both indoor and outdoor play areas, creating the perfect environment for children to move freely and enjoy everything we offer. The layout allows staff to easily observe and engage with the children, ensuring a sense of connection and safety at all times.

Inside, we have thoughtfully arranged various play and learning areas that reflect the children’s interests, often set up with their input. Children can explore these spaces at their own pace, choosing activities independently or with gentle guidance from our staff, fostering both freedom and support in their learning journey.

The hall opens up to a large, sun-filled garden—a welcoming space where children can explore and play to their hearts’ content. With climbing frames, outdoor equipment, a mud kitchen, a music and water wall, a willow tunnel, and a dedicated gardening area, there’s always something exciting to discover.

Children are free to run, play, and let their imaginations take flight, creating their adventures with our wide range of outdoor resources. It's a space where creativity, exploration, and fun come together naturally!

Edzell is a truly special place which gets the balance of care, learning and fun just right. All the staff are fantastic - not only experts in their field but incredibly dedicated, kind, caring and nurturing. It’s clear to see how much the children love them, and how well they respond to their teachers. As a parent, it was a huge comfort to know that my children were in such good hands and that the staff were easily available to speak to.

The emphasis on outdoor activities, both in the garden and in other locations, come rain or shine, was what really stood out about Edzell for me. My children’s favourite days were when they got to do art outdoors, tand hen bring their creations home with them.

My children could not have been happier at Edzell and it was the perfect preparation, not just for school, but for life. We all miss Edzell but are truly grateful that it was part of our lives.

“We always felt confident that our little boy was safe, supported and stimulated at Edzell. The staff are all fantastic and bring a diverse mix of experience and expertise. The nursery has a great garden that the children were free to frequent whenever they pleased. Outdoor and independent play were a big part of the nursery environment, which our son responded really well to. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Edzell.”

Both of our children attended Edzell from 2020 – 2023. We all absolutely loved our time here, our children were quick to settle but at the points where they needed extra encouragement, the nursery helped provide clear and articulated plans on how to ease the transition, looking at items to implement at home and nursery. This supportive and reassuring approach ensured this was a quick learning process and we felt comfortable knowing how the teachers would respond to my child when upset.

We witnessed our children’s confidence both within themselves and their abilities grow immeasurably during their time here; from their abilities to put on their coats and shoes, serve themselves snacks to comfortably make their voices recognised within the nursery environment, it was wonderful to see them both grow. All staff are fantastic, we have no faults at all and we were extremely sad to leave. The biggest testament we can attribute to the nursery’s success is how well my daughter was prepared for school. Edzell is a beautiful setting, which with its child-led focus and approach created a nurturing environment which is so invaluable within their younger years. The patience, kindness and understanding of all children is a huge testimonial to the nursery and I would thoroughly recommend Edzell to any parents of young children.
